#sblug IRC channel

What is IRC?

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is an early form of real-time Internet chat. IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen in 1988 and has been going strong ever since.

IRC is used a lot by open-source communities. Many major open source projects have a channel that may be used for mutual user help or for communication between distributed developers.

What is #sblug?

#sblug (pronounced Hash sblug) is a new channel for Linux users in Birmingham and anyone else that happens to come along. We have only just got started so it is pretty quiet at most times although we sometimes announce a sporadic "IRC hour" on the mailing list when we particularly encourage people to be online.

Connection Settings

The server is: irc.freenode.net

The channel is #sblug

(Chatzilla users can click here.)

For experienced IRC users that is probably all you need to know.

If you have never used IRC before then you need to use an IRC client. Any client that works for you should do. Here we provide some examples, your Linux distribution's package system will offer you many irc clients.

Text-based

Accessing IRC with a text based client like Irssi is very popular. Especially if you have a computer/server that stays on for very long periods (such as 24 hours a day), in that case then you can open Irssi in GNU Screen and then leave it running. When you want to go and do something else, you just detach (Ctrl-A, Ctrl-D) the screen from the terminal, when you want to come back then you just reattach your terminal to the screen.

Other text approaches include using ERC, a plugin for Emacs or VimIRC, a script for VIM.

Firefox

Another popular method to use the Chatzilla plugin for Firefox and other Mozilla browsers.

Gnome

GAIM - comes by default on most Gnome systems, GAIM supports IRC, just add a new account in the normal way.

KDE

KDE has many clients, some popular ones include Kopete, KSirc and KVIrc

Online Page
